Meet Charlotte George

Charlotte George was born and raised in New Zealand, where a coastline is never far away and weather arrives quickly. That landscape — tidal, changeable, close at hand — remains the source her painting keeps returning to, even now that her studio is based in the United States.

She came to painting through fashion design. Years spent working with cloth, colour and construction left a discipline that is still visible in the work: an eye for how a surface behaves, how pigment pools or resists, how a single unexpected passage can hold an entire composition together. Where a designer resolves a garment, Charlotte resolves a picture plane — building, cutting back, and knowing when to stop.

Her practice is multidimensional and multi-medium. Heavy-bodied paint is layered with inks and poured passages, so that the finished surface carries genuine relief: ridges, pools, fine fissures and glossed depths that shift as the light in a room changes through the day. Abstract landscape is the organising idea rather than a subject to be described. Nothing is illustrated; instead the work holds the movement of water, the weight of a sky, the temperature of a particular hour.

Colour is decided intuitively and then tested at length. Charlotte works in series, allowing one canvas to inform the next, and a body of work is only released when the sequence resolves. Collections such as Americano, Waterline, River's Return and Earth's Whisper each began with a specific stretch of water or light and were developed until the material found its own logic.

Her work has been shown in international gallery exhibitions, appeared in international print media, and in November 2025 four pieces from Earth's Whisper premiered in 3D on the screens of Times Square, New York, as part of ETHE/REAL curated by Arteom Gallery. Several collections have sold out on release, and her paintings are now held in private collections internationally.

Built in layers, resolved by instinct

Charlotte works flat and upright in turn, moving between heavy-bodied acrylic laid on with knives and fluid inks allowed to travel across the surface. Passages are poured, tilted, blotted and reworked; some are sealed under gloss, others left raw so the weave of the canvas still reads.

The process is deliberately experimental. Accidents are kept when they are better than the plan, and a painting is frequently interrupted and returned to weeks later. The small, unexpected details — a hairline of copper, a bloom where two inks met — are usually the last things added and the first things collectors notice in person.

Because each surface is built by hand, no two works repeat. Scale, relief and finish are decided per painting, which is why dimensions and medium are listed individually on every artwork.
